What is RMG 380?

RMG 380 is a residual marine fuel oil with a maximum viscosity of 380 centistokes (cSt) at 50 °C. The designation comes from the international standard ISO 8217 (Petroleum products — Fuels (class F) — Specifications of marine fuels): Residual Marine Grade, with the number indicating the viscosity limit at 50 °C.

It is a heavy fuel oil (HFO) produced from the residue of crude oil refining. At ambient temperature it is viscous and may need heating for pumping and combustion. It is the most widely used bunker grade for large ocean-going vessels with engines designed for residual fuel.

Application in marine / shipping

RMG 380 is used in marine main and auxiliary engines, as well as boilers and generators on board ships. It is the standard bunker fuel for:
